The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course is identified by the American Medical Association as an evidencebased approach to experiencing a greater sense of health and well-being as well as renewing joy in practice. Mindfulness is a natural human capacity that involves paying attention on purpose and with kindness moment by moment. Jon Kabat-Zinn, MD, University of Massachusetts Medical School, developed the eight-week MBSR program that has emerged as a recognized protocol for developing a foundation in mindfulness practice and for applications in health care settings. Literature found that MBSR participants experienced a greater sense of health and well-being, reduced reactivity to stressors, and increased understanding of the mind-body relationship.
This MBSR course involves a one-hour online orientation session on February 22, eight 1.5-hour class sessions, and a Saturday, April 28 retreat. The one-hour orientation is required for all participants. The orientation provides and overview of the course and the commitment it entails as well as an opportunity to meet the instructor. It helps participants prepare and determine if this class fits for them at this time.
MBSR engages participants in establishing a daily mindfulness practice and involves practicing with guided meditations and reading course materials between sessions. MBSR course participants will receive an MBSR workbook and materials to support the required daily practice.
Learners engage in meditation and gentle movement that help cultivate increased attention, awareness, and acceptance. The yoga and movement practices are adapted for participants of all abilities.
Participants are encouraged to actively engage in all sessions and the daily practices. Thus, MBSR is a significant commitment. If participants might miss two or more sessions, or will be unable to practice between sessions, please consider taking the course another time.
Jeffrey Brantley, MD, founder and instructor in Duke Integrative Medicine’s MBSR program, will lead this course which is limited to 25 participants.
